DR liberated! A group known as La Trinitaria—founded by Juan Pablo Duarte, Ramón Matías Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez—seized Puerta del Conde in Santo Domingo launched the Dominican War of Independence on February 27, 1844. DR had been politically autonomous in the early 1800s and declared independence as the short-lived Republic of Spanish Haiti in 1821. Haiti and the Dominican Republic are both on the island of Hispaniola, an island that Haiti had control over. On February 27, La Trinitaria came together with around 100 men to storm Puerta del Conde, forcing the Haitian army out of Santo Domingo. Sanchez fired a cannon shot from the fort raising the blue, red, and white flag of the Dominican Republic. #ThisWeekInHistory #DominicanRepublic #DR #Haiti #Independence #DominicanIndependenceDay
