La Lupe became one of the most distinct and electrifying Afro-Cuban voices in music. Born Lupe Victoria Yolí Raymond on December 23, 1936, the Queen of Latin Soul had a love for music from an early age, going as far as skipping school to win a radio competition. In the 1950s, La Lupe had become a staple of Havana’s nightlife—her first performances at the cabaret La Red in 1958 launched her into fame. When the Cuban Revolution came, like other artists, La Lupe left Cuba and soon found herself in New York in 1963. Throughout her career she became known for her controversial performance style which was often seen as bold and sensual. In 1964, La Lupe and Tito Puente recorded the classic “Que Te Pedi”. She retired fro music in the 1980s due to her religion and died in 1992 at the age of 52.
