Did you know about the African roots of Horchata? Posted @withregram@latincity 🌍 Did You Know? Horchata’s Roots Are in Africa! 🌱 Before it became the creamy, refreshing drink we love today, horchata started its journey in West Africa and ancient Egypt—made from tigernuts (chufa), a small tuber cultivated for thousands of years. 🥤 In Nigeria, a similar drink called “kunnu aya” is still popular, blending tigernuts with water, ginger, and dates. 🌿 The drink traveled to Spain with the Moors, evolving into horchata de chufa in Valencia. Later, Spanish colonizers brought it to the Americas, where it transformed into the rice-based horchata we know in Mexico and beyond. From Africa → Spain → Latin America, horchata’s history is a delicious story of cultural fusion. 🌍✨ 🎥 @latinationmedia #HorchataHistory #AfricanRoots #FoodCulture #Tigernuts #GlobalFlavors #AfroDiaspora #FoodEducation #CulturalHeritage
