Since Venezuela’s heavily disputed elections on July 28, 2024, Nicolas Maduro’s regime has detained over 2,200 people. As those imprisoned suffer under the harrowing conditions of Venezuela’s prisons, the weight of ensuring their safety and caring for their health is placed on their female family members. Many Venezuelan women whose family members were detained have upended their lives to fight for justice for their loved ones, navigate the courts to plead their case, and bring medicine and food packages to them, as in many prisons, only women are allowed to visit political prisoners due to arbitrary security reasons. As over 20 million Venezuelans live in multidimensional poverty, this can become extremely taxing financially and mentally, and many have gone into serious debt in caring for their imprisoned family members.
