Afro-Cubana Gina Torres (@iamginatorres) is a trailblazing Afro-Latina in Hollywood. Born in Manhattan on April 25, 1969, and raised in the Bronx as the youngest of three by her Cuban parents, Torres is known for her work on shows including “Suits,” “Pearson,” “Firefly,” and “9-1-1: Lone Star” and is a staunch advocate for Afro-Latina inclusion and representation on screen. Throughout her 30-year career, Torres has opened up about how coming from a culturally Cuban background, she found it difficult to show up as her full, authentic self as an Afro-Latina on screen and felt boxed in as an actress: “I feel like I was living in three worlds. There was my world that I grew up in, also Spanish-speaking.
