Queer Afro-latina particle physicist Jessica Esquivel, who is of Mexican descent, is a trailblazer in her field. As the second black woman to graduate with a PhD in physics from Syracuse University and as the third Black woman to hold an Associate Scientist position at Fermilab, she represents Black and Brown Latinxs who are underrepresented in STEM. Her TedTalk “The Queer Universe: A quantum explanation” centered on the idea that that the universe at its smallest scales is non-binary and queer.
