President Trump’s latest executive orders directed at DEI efforts, observances including Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month, and renaming the Gulf of Mexico have all been criticized and viewed as attacks on communities of color. While these executive orders might seem dangerous, it’s important to note that executive orders are not definitive and must be rooted in one of the President’s powers outlined in the Constitution or in a law passed by Congress. No president can issue an order contradicting or violating the Constitution, federal laws or Americans’ fundamental rights, and courts have struck down executive orders in many instances, including during Trump’s first term.
