We love to see cultural artifacts returned to their rightful home 🙌 On January 3, officials from the Mexican and Italian governments announced the return of 101 artifacts from Teotihuacan, Zapotec, Aztec, and Mesoamerican Classic and Preclassic cultures during a restitution ceremony at the Mexican consulate in Rome. The collection includes anamorphic and zoomorphic sculptures and renderings that are culturally significant to Mexico, including a vase depicting Tlaloc, the rain-god of Tlolec-Maya culture. According to the General Director of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History, Diego Prieto Hernández, the artifacts come from different regions of Mesoamerica and range from the year 900 to the 16th century: “Most of them are anthropomorphic figures, which shows the enormous value that our ancestors gave to the human body, although there are also decorative elements and objects of daily use.” #Mexico #MexicanHistory #Mesoamerica #IndigenousCulture #IndigenousHistory #...
