Latina history was made! 👏 President Biden signed a bill renaming the U.S. Courthouse in Los Angeles after Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez —the parents of Sylvia Mendez, whose case helped end legal school segregation in California. Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez U.S. Courthouse is the first federal courthouse in U.S. history named after a Latina. Gonzalo, who was Mexican, and Felicitas, who was Puerto Rican, sued a Westminster school district who refused to enroll their children due to their skin color. Mendez et al. v. Westminster, et al., became a historic case in ending school segregation in California—making it the first state to do so and setting up the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling.
