Latinx representation matters because it allows us to see ourselves and our stories in the media we enjoy, and this year, five of the 25 movies inducted into the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress featured prominent Latinx leads and storylines, setting a record for the most inductions featuring Latinx leads and stories given in a year. On December 17, the Library of Congress announced that “Spy Kids,” “Up in Smoke,” “Mi Familia,” “American Me” and “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” would be inducted into the National Film Registry. According to Texas Representative Joaquín Castro, who has worked to increase the number of Latinx films chosen for preservation, this marks a record number of inductions of this kind in a given year.
Additionally, the announcement marks Mexican-American director Gregory Nava’s third film in the registry with “Mi Familia,” joining his films “El Norte” and “Selena,” and Mexican-American actor Edward James Olmos stars in two of the five selected ...
