It was on Thanksgiving Day in 1999 that 5-year-old Cuban boy Elián González was found floating alone in an inner tube three miles off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida by two fishermen after three days and nights alone at sea. Elian was on his way to the U.S. along with his mother and others from Cuba who died on the way. After arriving in the United States, he was taken in by his uncle, Lazaro Gonzalez, and other relatives in Miami. The Cuban government sent a request to the U.S. mission in Havana requesting Elian's return to Cuba. His rescue became a subject of debate on asylum with his father demanding he be sent back to Cuba. In April 2000 Elian was taken from his relative’s home by government officials and sent back to Cuba in June. He has since earned an engineering degree and in 2023, he was elected to the National Assembly of People's Power, representing Cárdenas, Cuba.
