The City of Los Angeles is on its way to becoming a sanctuary city. The Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted 13-0 to pass a “sanctuary city” ordinance this week to prohibit local resources from being used to help federal immigration authorities, codify protections for undocumented immigrants, and prohibit the direct/indirect sharing of data with federal immigration authorities. The LA public school system also reaffirmed itself as a “sanctuary” for undocumented migrants and queer students with a series of emergency resolutions.
Los Angeles is the second largest U.S. city and is the city with the largest Latinx population in the U.S. According to a 2022 report from the University of Southern California’s Dornsife Equity Research Institute, over 3.6 million people in Los Angeles are immigrants, and it is estimated that the county is home to 800,000 undocumented migrants.
