Colombia recently made moves to protect against minors getting married. On Nov. 13, Congress approved a law banning marriages or unions involving minors. Despite facing barriers and several failed attempts through the year, the law will be sent to President Gustavo Petro for approval. It was promoted under the slogan “Son niñas, no esposas,” meaning “They are girls, not wives,” as it specifically seeks to prevent girls and young women being pressured into forced marriages and protect them from different kinds of violence. According to the 2018 National Population and Housing Census, 1.8% of girls aged 10 to 14 and 15% of girls aged 15 to 19 in Colombia were or had ever been married or in a permanent union.
