Did you know that 71 years ago this week, Mexicanas were given the right to vote? On October 17, 1953, a reform to Constitutional Article 34, which promoted women’s suffrage in Mexico, was approved. With this, Mexican women gained the right to vote and participate politically.
Despite women playing a fundamental role in Mexico’s independence and revolution, they did not obtain the right to vote and participate politically until this point. Mexicanas’ lucha and fight for equality is not forgotten, and their efforts are meaningful, especially with Mexico electing its first female president Claudia Sheinbaum in June of this year.
In an emotional speech on the day of her inauguration, the 62-year-old scientist and former mayor of Mexico City said, “It’s time for transformation, it’s time for women… I’m a mother, a grandmother, a scientist and a woman of faith, and from today, by the will of the Mexican people, the president.”
