Silvana Garza Valdez and María Paula Zárate, both 19 years old, are being hailed as heroes for saving 20 girls who were under their care during the Texas floods. ⁠ ⁠ María Paula recounted in a later interview that it started to rain at around 1 in the morning. The rain was so intense that they couldn't sleep and spent the day sheltered in the cabins.⁠ ⁠ Silvana said that at around 3AM, the power went out throughout the camp and they decided to move the younger girls to other cabins in order to protect them.⁠ ⁠ The young women wrote their names on the girls' arms and placed identification badges on them, as a measure to facilitate their location in case they were separated. Additionally, they wrote their own names on their skin, in visible places.⁠ ⁠ Both Silvana and María Paula kept the girls calm throughout the entire ordeal.⁠ ⁠ “Thank God we were okay, and most of them were rescued.
