Silvana Garza Valdez and María Paula Zárate, both 19 years old, are being hailed as heroes for saving 20 girls who were under their care during the Texas floods.
María Paula recounted in a later interview that it started to rain at around 1 in the morning. The rain was so intense that they couldn't sleep and spent the day sheltered in the cabins.
Silvana said that at around 3AM, the power went out throughout the camp and they decided to move the younger girls to other cabins in order to protect them.
The young women wrote their names on the girls' arms and placed identification badges on them, as a measure to facilitate their location in case they were separated. Additionally, they wrote their own names on their skin, in visible places.
Both Silvana and María Paula kept the girls calm throughout the entire ordeal.
“Thank God we were okay, and most of them were rescued. Obviously, we were going to pray for those who were missing,” said Silvana.
