Latina power in action ✨Adriana Ruano Oliva just made history as the first Guatemalan woman to medal in the trap final and Guatemala’s first gold medallist ever. The former gymnast-turned-shooter also set a new record in the process with a final score of 45 of 50, breaking the previous record set by Slovakia in 2021 of 43.
After a spinal injury ended her career as a gymnast at 16 years old, Ruano was crushed to not be able to compete as an Olympic gymnast and recovered for a year with a brace. Her doctor eventually suggested that she try trap shooting if she wanted to continue her career as an athlete, and after volunteering at the 2016 Rio Olympics, she decided to shift gears and try her hand at the sport. Despite the death of her father just weeks before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she finished in 26th place, and a decade later after her spinal injury, she won Guatemala’s first Olympic gold medal in history, dedicating it to her father’s memory.
