¡Azúcar! After the U.S. Mint announced in February of last year that iconic singer Celia Cruz was one of the five honorees selected for the American Women Quarters program, the special edition quarters with her image officially went into circulation on August 9th.
The quarter features the iconic Cubana with a big smile, a microphone in her hand, and her signature catchphrase “¡Azúcar!” on the back while the other side has an image of George Washington.
The Queen of Salsa is renowned for popularizing Afro-Cuban music styles like guaracha, rumba, son, and bolero as well as highlighting the richness of Cuban culture. In a 1997 interview, she reflected on her life and career:
