AFL star Izak Rankine has apologised for using a homophobic slur.
The Adelaide Crows star Izak Rankine, midfielder for the Crows, said the slur whilst playing against the Collingwood Football Club, during a Saturday (16 August) match.
Upon returning from a sabbatical in Europe, Rankine spoke to press at Adelaide Airport on Tuesday August 2.
“It was wrong, and I take full responsibility,” the 25-year-old said in a prepared statement.
“I’m disappointed in myself. I know I’ve let a lot of people down. I want to apologise to anyone that I’ve hurt or offended."
“I understand that word is offensive, it’s harmful. It’s hurtful and has no place in our game or our society."
“I am in no way a victim, but going away has given me a space to reflect and educate myself. To understand the weight of my mistake, and I fully commit to bettering myself in that area.”
