China started to discharge water and sediment of the Yellow River on September 8, to alleviate safety concerns during the flood season, as recent rainfall has caused a noticeable rise in water levels.
The operations were carried out in the major reservoirs including Sanmenxia and Xiaolangdi. They are expected to last for a week. The Xiaolangdi Reservoir releases water at a maximum discharge rate of around 2,800 cubic meters per second. The operation is expected to release approximately 1.5 billion cubic meters of water.
