Iceland is renowned for its harsh climate, changeable weather and volatile geology. In 1882 a sandstorm devastated a huge area near Hekla volcano but a startling strip of land was protected thanks to sitting in the shadow of a mountain. ⁣ ⁣ The forest here flourished, however the surrounding area was destroyed and remains barren to this day.
