“There are coordinated efforts to undermine human rights and the rule of law around the world,” unitednationshumanrights chief Volker Türk warns, in the face of crises and growing global challenges.
Speaking at the 60th session of the
#UnitedNations humanrightscouncil at ungeneva on Monday, he stressed: “History has shown time and again that no one is safe when human rights are under attack.”
He added that we need to safeguard eighty years of progress on freedom, equality and justice. “Human rights — all human rights — are the solid foundations of flourishing societies. They are the bonds of trust between people and their governments. They are a beacon of hope in the search for a better world that rejects violent conflict, brutality and injustice.”
“Ignoring the law normalizes violations. Selective use of the law threatens justice,” Volker Türk noted.
