#WorldCup 2010. A man and his dog sit in a compound outside the new stadium, while a controlled burn, probably as a means of disposing of garbage, happens in the background. The stadium was brand new, but the economic benefits hadn’t yet translated to the land surrounding the stadium. 8 years later, according to Google Maps satellite photos, the area around the stadium includes a mall, a pizza place, and enough housing developments to support schools. I hope the man in this photograph sold his land for an exorbitant amount to a developer, and is spending the rest of his days on a beach, or a boat, or wherever makes him, and his dog, happy. This was winter in South Africa, but the land around JoBurg was parched. This burn was not the only controlled burn.
