๐ฟ๐ฆ Happy Iguana Awareness Day! ๐ฆ๐ฟ
Today weโre shining the spotlight on a truly stunning species you can meet right here at your Toronto Zoo โ the Lau banded iguana!
With their vibrant green scales, bold white or blue bands, and curious personalities, these rare reptiles are native to the Lau Islands of Fiji โ and theyโre just as tropical and terrific as they sound. ๐๐ด
But donโt let their beauty fool you โ these iguanas are more than just pretty faces. They play an important role in their island ecosystem, helping to disperse seeds and maintain plant diversity. Sadly, due to habitat loss and invasive species, Lau banded iguanas are endangered, which makes our conservation efforts at your Toronto Zoo all the more important.
๐ฆ Did you know? Males and females can be told apart by their patterns โ males have bright bands while females are usually solid green. (Stylish in their own way, of course.)
