At Nvidia’s AI Summit in Tokyo, CEO Jensen Huang revealed a story that stunned the crowd. Nearly a decade ago, Softbank’s Masayoshi Son offered to lend him the money to buy Nvidia outright.
“Masa said, ‘Jensen, the market doesn’t understand the value of Nvidia. Your future is incredible. Let me give you the money to buy Nvidia.’ Now I regret not taking it,” Huang recalled.
The conversation happened just after Son’s Softbank bought Arm Holdings for $32 billion in 2016. At the time, Softbank even owned 5% of Nvidia but sold its stake for under $4 billion. Today, that same stake would be worth around $178 billion.
The missed opportunity has since become one of tech’s most expensive “what ifs” and Huang isn’t letting anyone forget it.
