Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office is seeking to extend negotiations to discuss the terms of a $750 million bridge loan to support Bay Area transit services, which is not expected to be approved before the Sept. 12 deadline.
The proposed loan would support public transit funding until 2027, when Senate Bill 63 — a potential 2026 ballot measure proposed by state Sens. Jesse Arreguín and Scott Wiener — would be able to provide long-term transit funding, said Stefan Elgstrand, Arreguín’s press secretary.
If a bridge loan is unable to go through, BART and AC Transit anticipate major service cuts and delays to public transit, according to the agencies’ spokespeople. Newsom’s office stated that it is “working closely” with stakeholders on the funding deal, and aims to agree on the terms by this fall.
