The Artsgarden Visionary: Walter S. Blackburn⁠ ⁠ Walter Scott Blackburn (1938–2000) was a pioneering architect whose vision helped shape Indianapolis’s modern skyline. Blackburn grew up in Indianapolis before studying engineering at Purdue University and later architecture at Howard University, where he graduated in 1963. After returning home, Blackburn founded Blackburn Architects in 1981, quickly gaining national recognition for his innovative and community-centered designs.⁠ ⁠ His portfolio includes some of Indianapolis’s most defining landmarks—the Hoosier Dome, Grace Apostolic Church, the Indiana Convention Center expansion, and most notably, the Indianapolis Artsgarden.
