I say, old sport! 🍾 This time 99 years ago, the Studebaker Theater was in an extension of The Great Gatsby, a theatrical version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. The play was adapted by Pulitzer Prize–winning dramatist Owen Brady, less than a year after the book’s publication. It was a hit on Broadway, where it ran for 6 months in 1926, before transferring to Chicago in August. Many members of the original 40-person Broadway cast starred in the Chicago production, including James Rennie as Gatsby, Catherine Willard as Jordan, and Josephine Evans as Myrtle. Both critics and audiences loved it, and the play’s success is credited with helping popularize the book. This year marks the 100th anniversary of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby! What’s your favorite adaptation? Thanks to elainaeichorn for sharing the photo of the playbill with us, which can be found at uchicago library.
