Nearly 30 UC Berkeley sport clubs have experienced vast structural changes after 50 years of precedent. The clubs have taken on greater administrative and financial autonomy after a series of realignments that were first introduced this past summer, with logistical shifts now overwhelming typical club functions and causing stress and confusion. Some sport clubs may need to adjust materials to be in accordance with campus branding policies — using “Cal,” “Berkeley,” “California,” “Golden Bears” or “UC” at the beginning of a club sport name is in violation of the student club naming convention, according to campus spokesperson Adam Ratliff. Ratliff said these changes are meant to provide sport clubs with greater independence and clarify the relationship between campus and student-run athletics.
