More Iowans are being stopped by law enforcement for using their phones while driving.
Until the start of 2026, these drivers will only receive a warning for not following Iowa's new hands-free driving law that went into effect on July 1.
"This is going to be an important law that will change driver behavior, and we have already continued to see the benefits of this new law as our fatalities have started to go down in the state of Iowa," said Sgt. Alex Dinkla, Iowa State Patrol public information officer.
Iowa traffic fatalities through Sept. 9, 2025, are down 14% compared to the same time period in 2024, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation's fatality report.
