I was taken out of the home at 7 years old and placed in kinship care. Programs like Medicaid and SNAP helped my relatives care for me. When I aged out at 16, I had nowhere to go. I was a junior in high school, pregnant, and surviving because of the same programs they’ve cut. Medicaid kept me and my baby alive. Food pantries kept us fed. And shelters gave us a roof at night. When I worked in education, most of the teachers I knew were also receiving benefits. Someone you love is struggling to eat right now, they just haven’t told you. This is why I fight so hard.
