On This Day | September 17, 1849 Harriet Tubman, at just 27 years old, made the brave decision to escape slavery in Maryland. Guided by faith and determination, she found freedom in Pennsylvania—but she didn’t stop there. Tubman returned to the South again and again, leading dozens of enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad.
