The AC Transit Board of Directors, which governs the AC Transit bus system, has removed a Department of Homeland Security grant application from consideration in its Sept. 10 meeting agenda. The grant, which would provide the agency with funds for security, comes with requirements to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, claimed an online post from AC Transit board member Jean Walsh. The grant, according to a staff report from the AC Transit Board, would provide approximately $523,000 to fund additional security at large events over the course of three years. The grant would pay for overtime for Alameda County Sheriff’s Office officers to focus on counterterrorism and crime prevention at these events. “The surge support will provide deterrents for would-be offenders in hot spot areas as well as enhance public perception of safety of AC Transit services,” according to the staff report.
