An ICE detainment facility in Aurora, Colorado has ended its provision of gender-affirming medical care and protective policies for transgender detainees.
The change came via a memo to the GEO Group, the company that operates the facility, rescinding a 2022 directive that had required continuing gender-affirming care for detainees already receiving it before their detainment.
The policy also included housing trans detainees according to their gender identity, separate bathing protections, and a committee to oversee their treatment.
As of last month, the Aurora facility had placed eight detainees in its dedicated trans unit, according to a report issued by U.S. Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO). New trans detainees are now being housed among the general population, according to Monique Sherman, managing attorney for the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network’s detention program.
