Dani dulce.dani.i is a gay non-binary person from El Salvador. They came to the UK seeking safety because they described El Salvador as being “extremely homophobic.” In 2023, they were granted refugee status. Dani spoke to PinkNews about growing up in El Salvador and coming to terms with their queerness, facing discrimination and physical attacks and rejection from their family. Upon arriving in the UK, Dani discovered the London drag scene and began performing as Dulce. They opened up about how drag allowed them to explore parts of their gender identity that they felt they always had to hide, which helped them come to the realisation that they were non-binary. Now having built a new life in the UK, Dani is beginning to reconnect with their family, whom they hadn’t seen in eight years.
