Lawmakers in Hong Kong have rejected a bill that would have granted some limited rights to same-sex couples, in a vote that showed an "alarming disdain" for the community. The proposed law, which would have recognised a small number of rights for couples who were married overseas, was shot down by a massive majority of the 89-member Legislative Council (LegCo). LGBTQ rights activist Jimmy Sham said: “Today, the ‘Same-Sex Civil Partnership Bill’ was formally rejected during its second reading in the Legislative Council, which I find deeply regrettable” Sham, whose long-running legal challenge pushed the government to act in the first place, said the government's failure to protect same-sex couples' rights "would remain an open wound." #LGBTQNews #HongKong #HongKongNews #SameSexMarriage
