The Multnomah County Distict Attorney’s Office issued a dire warning after a judge handed down a probationary punishment to a Portland man who posted his dangerous driving exploits to social media. During a Monday bench trial, Circuit Judge Katharine von Ter Stegge found the driver, Oscar Burell Jr., guilty of two counts of reckless driving and a single charge of reckless endangerment — but acquitted him of eight other similar misdemeanors. The judge also suspended Burell’s license for 90 days, though prosecutors claim the punishment won’t stop Burell from driving. In a statement issued Tuesday, Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez called the decision to acquit Burell on some charges “bewildering.” “I strongly disagree with Judge Von Ter Stegge’s evaluation of the facts in this case,” Vasquez said.
