When we met Tina, one of the first things she told us was: “I’m a grower at heart. I want things to grow and change—plants, people…” It’s something she’s done her whole life. After all, when it comes to plants, she just recently retired from her longtime work as a succulent plant grower, overseeing the nurturing of nearly 40 thousand plants out in Vista, California. When it comes to people, it’s even more evident. 35 years ago, when her son’s school didn’t have a Phys Ed teacher, Tina stepped up to help the kids stay active and continue to develop. A noble mission that would eventually kickstart her love for soccer. She gave them a ball to play with, and as soon as she saw them kicking it, she knew she wanted to try it too. Soon, she began playing with other women who’d also never played before. But it didn’t matter. Just as we’ve all found out one way or another, the beautiful game is more than just kicking a ball. As Tina puts it so perfectly, “You become part of ‘something.’” ...
