Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? So was she. Meet Fannie Lou Hamer. ⤵️ Fannie Lou Hamer (1917–1977) was a civil rights activist and organizer known for voting rights efforts. Her advocacy also included racial, food, disability, and reproductive justice. We honor her this #NationalVoterRegistrationDay! In 1963, after returning from a voter registration program in Charleston, South Carolina, Hamer and several other Black women were arrested for sitting in a “whites-only” restaurant in Winona, Mississippi. At the Winona jailhouse, she and several of the women suffered unspeakable violence and intimidation at the hands of white supremacists and police. In response, she spoke out and furthered the fight for voting rights by co-founding the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), which challenged the dominant force in Mississippi politics, the pro-segregation Democratic Party.
