On a sunlit afternoon in Overtown, festival project manager Christell Victoria Roach welcomed us into her digital ekphrasis workshop, Over the Town.

@dunnsovertownfarm, Founder and Director Dr. Marvin Dunn began our journey with powerful historical context, grounding us in the legacy of the neighborhood participants would soon tour. Christell shared treasures from her personal archive before leading the group through 9th Street, one of the most historically rich corridors in Miami’s Black history.
Together, we moved through themes of Black identity, Caribbean heritage, migration, and music, writing in place in response to archival photos reanimated through Augmented Reality at the very sites they were originally taken.
The day also held unexpected surprises, including an impromptu visit to the historic Ward Rooming House, which opened its doors and offered a deeper glimpse into its role as a cornerstone of the neighborhood’s legacy. Later, Dr. Dunn closed the day with a gift...
