With fewer than 10,000 remaining in the wild, Red Pandas face serious threats from habitat loss, poaching, the illegal pet trade, and disease — challenges largely driven by human activity. Because of this, they are officially listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). At your Toronto Zoo, we take part in the Species Survival Plan (SSP), a global program that safeguards animals at risk of extinction by managing breeding, genetics, and long-term population sustainability.
