Robert Redford was known to champion new voices in filmmaking, particularly through the Sundance Institute, which he founded with a goal to cultivate ideas among aspiring filmmakers. Chris Eyre was invited to the Sundance Labs in 1995 to workshop his feature film “Smoke Signals,” which he says would launch his career in Hollywood. For our new 20/20 special, Eyre remembers working hand-in-hand with Redford: “He took an interest in my work, and we became friends for 30 years.” | Watch “Robert Redford: The Life and Legacy of an American Icon – 20/20 Special Edition” – tonight (Sept. 18th) at 9/8c on ABC.
