At just 19 years old, university student Ketia Moponda thought she was battling a simple case of βfreshersβ flu.β Within days, her condition worsened
doctors discovered she had meningococcal septicaemia, a severe bacterial infection that quickly led to sepsis.
To save her life, surgeons had to amputate both legs below the knee and all of her fingers after circulation to her limbs was cut off. She also required a skin graft to recover from a flesh-eating infection that developed.
Now alive at 19, Ketia is learning to walk again with prosthetic legs and bravely sharing her story to raise awareness about the dangers of mistaking serious infections for common illnesses.
