In a devastating blow to Latinx students in higher education, the Trump administration has cut a total of $350 million in funding to Hispanic-Serving Institutions across the nation. According to the U.S. Dept. of Education, the grants are “unconstitutional” and “racially discriminatory” because the funding is only available to schools with at least 25% full-time Latinx and Hispanic students. The Hispanic-Serving Institution Program was first created by Congress in 1998, and as of 2024, a total of 615 colleges and universities were recognized as HSIs according to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. The highest concentration of HSIs are in California and Texas, which account for 46% of HSIs.
