One of the most jarring realizations during a stillbirth is that you still need to go into labor and give birth, said Debbie Haine Vijayvergiya, whose daughter Autumn was stillborn in 2011. Sept. 19 is National Stillbirth Prevention Day, meant to bring visibility to these often-overlooked losses. There are more than 20,000 stillbirths in the U.S. each year. At least a quarter of them are likely preventable. For years, Debbie has championed a bill known as SHINE, or the Stillbirth Health Improvement and Education for Autumn Act, named after her daughter. The bill aims to reduce the country’s stillbirth rate, tackling gaps in research, data and awareness as well as authorizing tens of millions of dollars in new funding. It was reintroduced in Congress on Sept. 18. See more of Debbie in ProPublica’s documentary “Before a Breath,” which is distributed by ProPublica and The WNET Group thirteenwnet.
