Sergeant Lachie Gray possesses a unique skill – he is fluent in Auslan. Well before Lachie could speak English, he started signing at home to communicate with his mum who is deaf. His connection to the Deaf community has extended to his involvement with Deaf Football Victoria and his role as a police officer in Hastings. Lachie uses his Auslan skills to ensure that members of the Deaf and hard of hearing communities are treated fairly and provided the appropriate support, from interactions with the community in public, to assisting victims and arresting offenders. The southern suburbs and outskirts of Melbourne have the largest population of Deaf and hard of hearing people in Victoria and so his skills are highly sought after by his colleagues and other police units. This International Day of Sign Languages, Lachie encourages everyone to learn Auslan (even just a little bit) to better support the Deaf community who face constant communication barriers in their daily lives. ...
