Botswana’s men's 4x400m relay team stayed ice cold in the driving rain to snatch a historic gold from Team USA at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday.
Reigning world and Olympic 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin had looked poised to clinch a fourth successive American world title before he was overtaken at the death by the blitzing form of Collen Kebinatshipi, who won the 400m on Thursday.
With a time of 2:57.76, 0.07 seconds ahead of the US, Kebinatshipi, Lee Bhekempilo Eppie, Letsile Tebogo and Bayapo Ndori became the first ever African winners of the event.
"I had to run the most strategic leg because of the weather," said Kebinatshipi, per Reuters.
"I knew I had to go strong but still I wanted to save my energy for the last 100 metres. At the last 80m I pushed and started running faster. I am really grateful to have come home with two gold medals."
