If regulators give the green light, scientists will first release a small batch of genetically engineered mice on a private island to see if they can help curb Lyme disease. In the future, scientists are interested in releasing the mice on Nantucket, Massachusetts, but only if they get approval from locals, says Kevin Esvelt. “Even if they say ‘no.’ And then we walk away.
