I hear strong arguments on both sides of this debate, and I don’t know what the right solution is — but it’s hard to argue that athletes today aren’t, in many ways, acting like employees. That’s why one of the most heated conversations in college sports right now is whether athletes should officially be considered employees of their universities. When I asked Congressman Russell Fry about it, he didn’t hold back. His point was clear — athletes don’t want it, coaches don’t want it, and schools don’t want it. The risks he sees are higher costs, cut programs, and losing the true college experience. The SCORE Act takes the position of keeping student-athletes as student-athletes — not employees — but the debate is far from settled.
