Happy World Rhino Day! 🦏 Today, we’re celebrating Tamba and Jasiri, the two southern white rhinos who call the Detroit Zoo home. Southern white rhinos are the second-largest land mammals, weighing up to 5,000 pounds — but despite their size, they can run up to 30 mph! They have poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell and hearing, which helps them navigate their surroundings. Sadly, all five rhino species are threatened by poaching and habitat loss. Days like today remind us how important conservation efforts are to protect these incredible animals for future generations.
