Today, we proudly celebrate #WorldRhinoDay 🦏🧡 Have you met 22-year-old Vishnu, a male Greater One-Horned Rhino at your Toronto Zoo? Sadly, rhinos like Vishnu are listed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, with only a few thousand remaining in the wild. Their range is just a fraction of what it once was, and threats like habitat loss and poaching continue to put pressure on their survival and presence in-situ. But Vishnu also represents hope. His species is one of the greatest conservation success stories! From fewer than 200 individuals in the early 1900s to over 4,000 today, Greater One-Horned Rhinos have made an incredible comeback thanks to dedicated global efforts. Here at your Toronto Zoo, Vishnu’s story goes beyond conservation.
